Okay, so today is the first day of spring. That’s pretty cool, I guess. But if you live in the Northwest or maybe Minnesota or any place that only has a brief window of summer and cold misery the rest of the time, spring sometimes only means that on the rare day that’s sunny, it’s a little warmer, not colder.
But spring also means that blood oranges are in season. Because they come around when it’s almost April, they’re not in too many hot drinks. But it’s still kind of cold in Seattle, so I made this.
2 oz applejack
1/2 oz pimento dram (allspice dram)
Juice from 1/2 blood orange (allspice dram)
Agave, to taste (about 1/4 oz)
Hot water, to size/strength preference (about 4oz)
Blood orange or navel orange peel, for garnish
Gently stir applejack, pimento dram, blood orange juice and agave in a heat-resistant glass. Add hot water. Twist orange peel and drop in glass.
It’s simple and it’s awesome and while you might not have any of this lying around in your liquor cabinet, they’re all worth getting for some other amazing cocktails — the Jack Rose comes to mind for the applejack, the Lion’s Tail for the pimento dram.
